Scene Two – 2018 Diwali day in the busy square of Hyderabad

Manoj was selling hand towels and requesting to buy from all the passerby and commuters with his folded hands on one of the busy square of Hyderabad.

Incidentally, Ajay was passing from there and stopped due to a red signal. Manoj approached Ajay to which Ajay asked how much for a hand towel. Manoj replied 20 Rs. to which Ajay ignored him and sped away on a green signal. It was 6 pm on Diwali day and Ajay was going to buy crackers so he was already in rush.

But after he crossed the signal, he stopped a few meters away and parked his vehicle, and came back to Manoj. Ajay bought all the 100 hand towels from Manoj and said to him. “Bhaiya Ghar jao aur aaj Diwali manao(go home and celebrate your Diwali)”. To this gesture, Manoj couldn’t control his emotions and he burst into tears of happiness.

Ajay has given all these hand towels to his colleagues and friends as a Diwali gift. The amount which he was about to spend on extra crackers he made someone else’s Diwali. Every year he tries to make someone else’s Diwali brighter.

Scene One – The year 2000 Diwali day busy road on Delhi.

10 years Ajay old was selling earthen lantern(Diyas) with his father. Ajay was so much worried that if all these Diya’s are not sold then he can not go home and can’t celebrate Diwali. 

But then to all his surprise, People started coming to their roadside makeshift hand-drawn cart shop. One of the customers told his father that someone from their apartment complex has requested to all the residents of their apartment to buy the Diya’s from Ajay’s father’s shop. To support local vendors to meet their end needs.

Years passed away and Ajay excelled in studies. Now Ajay is a senior software engineer in a major IT company in Hyderabad. He understands the importance of celebrating festivals with family and the pain when you can’t.

A simple act of kindness and caring creates an endless ripple that leaves a lasting effect on someone’s life. There is always an Ajay in everyone’s heart lets bring him out on this Diwali.

There are certainly good things which are not recommended this Diwali due to social distancing measures. But still here are a few ways by which you can make this Diwali more meaningful and create this ripple of happiness.

  1. Make a hand-made Diwali gift for someone you love.
  2. Feed the strays in your neighborhood.
  3. Donate things which you don’t use anymore -: You can donate your old clothes, household items, toys, utensils, etc. These things will make a difference to someone.
  4. Indulge in Charity -: You can get in touch with charity organizations if you want to go the extra mile in trying to help the needy.
  5. Ditch Fire Crackers -: It will help in reducing air and noise pollution. Use green firecrackers if you still need to.
  6. Talk to your old friends -: Talk to your those friends whom you have not spoken for ages. Due to the pandemic, everyone is not having the best time, You never know this can make their day.
  7. Give to the Unexpected -: Spread the love on this spiritual holiday beyond the people you would normally celebrate with and give gifts to those who wouldn’t expect it. Some of these people could be the deliveryman, your landlord, the newspaper guy, a neighbor, etc.
  8. Start a new habit -: It can be the simplest thing which was pending for a long time. For example, waking up early, exercise regularly, watering plants, using stairs in place of lifts, showing gratitude in everything, reading a book. It can be anything that will make you happy.
