Parijana Mentors helping hearing-impaired students

Share good great things

It was a new normal for students to attend online classes when pandemic hit. But how would you understand a video lecture if you can’t hear anything out of it? That was the real pain for the students with hearing disabilities.

Parijana Mentors an NGO from Bengaluru came as hope for hearing impaired students of BD Tatti School for the Specially Abled, Lakshmeshwar, Gadag district, in Karnataka.

Parijana mentors are taking zoom sessions in sign language for class 10th students of this school.

The NGO had been sending videos in sign language for students for the past year. It took up the job of training teachers as also conducting classes. Uday Nagarkatti, a retired engineer from Wipro and founder of the NGO, said: “We have been producing videos in sign language for SSLC/PU and ITI students for three years now. So, producing content was not a major issue. While I took science and maths classes, our sign language expert took social science classes.”

The NGO also trained the school’s teachers in conducting online classes in sign language. They are now handling some of these classes on their own. “Not all students have Android phones. Even those who did were initially reluctant as they were not comfortable with technology. Now, they attend classes regularly and are faring well,” said Somanath Mahajanshettar, secretary, BD Tatti memorial charitable trust.

Efforts of Pariajan Mentors are bringing smiles to the faces of specially-abled children. We at Good Great Things appreciate this work and are thankful for their efforts. Please share this motivating story as much as possible, so that Parijana Mentors get their due appreciation and also inspire others.
